While the answer you’d like to hear and I’d like to say is a resounding, happy “yes”.
I cannot make that promise for you because you are in control of your own destiny. As to what your blog will finally become is in your hands. Blogs make money provided you start right, and when your blogs are nurtured, worked upon, and when you pour your dedication and passion into your work.
While Corbett Barr of Think Traffic, Dan of Tropical MBA, Craig of Time Management Ninja, Sean Ogle of Location 180, Matt of Nomadic Matt, and Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income have all made money, there are thousands of others who haven’t.
Let’s see why that happens:
It’s easy to start a blog, but hard to make it earn money for you
It’s hard to get started and take action. On top of that, you’ll have to start with basic set-up (Install wordpress, find plugins you need, install, design (find a free theme, buy a new theme, or get it custom designed), add content (a never-ending task that takes a great deal of commitment), and then promote (this, by itself, is a tremendous amount of work).
Content develop or blogging as per schedule and then promoting your blog(s)– both gargantuan tasks by themselves. It’ll take you anywhere from 3-8 years (depending on how you work and many other parameters) — provided you did everything right — to help you make money from blogging.
If you notice, none of this is “difficult”; it just takes energy, commitment, patience, and a strong, unshakable belief.
Content, design, and traffic – 3 keys to blogs that make money
The most important element of a successful blog is Content. Good quality posts, articles, or other content that makes people come back to your blog (think of the quality of content you’ve come to expect from magazines). The presence (or lack of) content that’s sharable and highly valuable will determine the success of your blog.
Add a decent design, fast-loading servers, and a hundred other things related to design to dress your blog up and these will add to your success rate.
Finally, the number of visitors will equate to the money you’ll earn from your blog.
A large number of audience that engages = more money.
Anything else you hear about blogging success and making money from blogs is optional — a part of “dressing up” your blog. Without these three critical elements, no blogger can ever make a sustainable living from blogging.
Your blog takes slightly longer time than you are willing to give it
Here’s the point that differentiates the winners from the losers; the survivors and the dead: Most people just stop short of the time it takes to succeed in blogging. Imagine this scenario: you are excited about a niche and its potential. You grab a domain, install WordPress, blog wild, and promote. 1 month? 3 months? 6 months? 2 years?
Yet, you don’t see the traffic you expected. You don’t hear from your readers. Your visitors don’t share, engage, or leave comments. You get frustrated and you let the steam fizzle. The energy dissipates. Your Interest fades.
Guess what? You just got off the bus just before it picks up speed. The first few years are crucial to get the “momentum going” as Danny Iny of “Engagement From Scratch” likes to say.
If you want to make money from your blog, you just have to keep doing the right thing for “as long as it takes” to “make money from your blog”. There’s no stopping in between. There are no breaks, and there’s certainly no “slowing down”.
Are you willing to take up the challenge? Are you prepared to run your blog like a business?
